PhotoRec ignores the filesystem and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's filesystem has been severely damaged or re-formatted.

PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from Hard Disks and CDRom and lost pictures (thus, its 'Photo Recovery' name) from digital camera memory. It will also find accidentally deleted partitions (either Apple Partitions, the newer EFI partitions and Windows MBR Partitons) and provide the necessary information for you to restore them using the Apple pdisk command (for Apple Partitions) or the gpt command for (for EFI partitions) After that (you may need to restart your computer), the tool will recover the original structure of the partition table and the file system (as a rule, it is either NTFS or FAT32) on the RAW drive and you can get access to the files stored on it.
The TestDisk program is powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). If the boot sector of the drive is damaged, TestDisk will prompt you to try recover it using Rebuild BS option. As a result, these programs are designed for support personnel and experienced Mac users. They are used on the command line in the Terminal. Next, you will be asked to select the destination where you want to paste the TestDisk recover files. Download TestDisk recovery software from the official site. Scroll through the list and select the file that you want to recover. TestDisk had said the filesystem seemed to be damaged. TestDisk will now show all the deleted files on your selected partition. GetDataBack recovered 100 of my files, all in perfect condition. With growing fear of damaging the data, I chose to try the recommended GetDataBack. TestDisk download contains TWO programs - TestDisk and PhotoRec. Concerning this thread, I tried TestDisk to recover my files from a 1TB ext drive to a new 2TB ext drive.
